Sisters Haven functions as a multifaceted facility, offering emergency shelter for women facing abuse, homelessness, and a transitional program tailored to individuals being released from incarceration in Northampton and adjacent counties in North Carolina. This endeavor distinguishes itself through its dedication to addressing the unique obstacles encountered by women, especially those reintegrating into society following non-violent offenses. Our mission is to create a safe refuge for women by implementing a dual-program approach. What makes Sisters Haven so unique is our commitment to assisting and collaborating with our clients to build confidence through resources specific to their needs.
In our nurturing setting, we provide a wide range of services including job training and assistance with job opportunities, temporary housing, mentorship, and substance abuse classes. In addition, we provide wrap-around services that promote well-being, learning, and healing. Our goal is to help empower our clients through positive and supportive relationships, enabling them to achieve their personal best.
At Sisters Haven, we strive to foster a sense of community among our clients, build relationships between our volunteers and clients, and ensure that our clients are given the tools and resources necessary to reach their goals. My professional journey began in March 1999, when I became a correctional officer at Greensville Correctional Center. In 2003, I had the privilege to join a pilot program for female offenders at the Southampton Pre-release Center for Women—a opportunity that clearly aligned with a divine plan.
As I observed the women in the program, I started to apply the skills and principles they learned, and experienced a transformative shift in my mindset. I realized that I had to overcome my "Stinking Thinking," and I embarked on a challenging but rewarding journey—a journey that was part of His plan.
One of the key principles I learned from the program still shapes my life today: the recognition that we are all part of a community and we have to support each other. This principle is the foundation of Sisters Haven.
